Diary of a Wimpy Kid - The Ugly Truth

Diary of a Wimpy Kid - The Ugly Truth - by Jeff Kinney

This book is the fifth in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid Series. It was sad at the beginning, but things start to turn Greg's way. He gets what he wants, but it ends unexpectedly. I think this is the last one of the series that Jeff Kinney is going to write. I liked this series, so I hope he is going to keep writing more.

The Trouble with Tuck

The Trouble with Tuck by Theodore Taylor

This book is sad but happy. It is a roller coaster of emotions because there are so many feelings of love and sadness in this book. It is about a girl named Helen and her pal named Tuck, the yellow Labrador you see in the picture. In the book, some trouble happens with Tuck. Helen took Tuck and tried to make it all better. I bet you are wondering why there is another dog in the picture. Well, her name is Daisy. That's all I'll tell you!

The Giver

The Giver by Lois Lowry

In this book, a boy Jonas is singled out for training by a person named "The Giver." I can't tell you what kind of training it is, all I can tell you is that it is special. My favorite part of this book was when he first read the rules for his new job. I liked that part the best because he was shocked and surprised and so was I.

NERDS: National Espionage, Rescue, and Defense Society

NERDS: National Espionage, Rescue, and Defense Society by Michael Buckley is a surprising book because you don't know what is going to happen around the next corner. At first Jackson was the most popular kid at school, then he got braces and ended up at the bottom of the heap. But then Jackson's braces start doing some pretty amazing things. Read the book to find out what they can do!

No Limits - The Will to Succeed

No Limits - The Will to Succeed by Michael Phelps with Alan Abrahamson is a book about Michael Phelps and his eight gold medals in swimming. He was the first person in swimming history to earn eight gold medals in one Olympics. A lot of people didn't believe he could earn the eight gold medals in one Olympics, but he did it. My favorite part of the the book was where he beat Cavic (pronouced Chavich) from Serbia, by 1/100 of a second in the 100 meter butterfly finals. It was amazing. I recommend this book to anybody who wants to do something big.

Esperanza Rising

Esperanza Rising by Pam Muñoz Ryan

This book is about a girl who lost her father on her birthday because bandits attacked him while he was painting a fence. From then on life was hard because Esperanza's family had to sell their home and then go to the U.S. to get jobs. The book was very sad because their life was so hard. It doesn't seem right. I really felt bad. Read the book to find out more.

This book is about a boy named Bud in an orphanage who escapes and goes on the lam in search of his father. He has five posters that lead to men called Herman E. Calloway and The Dusky Devastators of Depression. It turns out Herman E. Calloway isn't his father. Read the book to find out who he is!

It is very hard to let go of this book because it is so interesting.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen by Alan Moore, Kevin O'Neill, Ben Mimagmaliw and Bill Oakley is a great book with a lot of action starting from Miss Murry finding Mr. Quartermain. It is also very funny when Griffin wanders off and just shows up whenever he feels like it. My favorite part is when the League took the cavorite from James Moriarity and escaped with their lives. I recommend this book to people who like superpowered heroes.

Pride of Baghdad

Pride of Baghdad by Brian K. Baughan and Niko Henrichon is about four lions escaping from a zoo when their zoo was bombed by the U.S. Army. But luckily they survived. They have to find a way to live in the wasteland that used to be Iraq. I liked it but it is very sad because the lions die. The U.S. soldiers shot them because they were scared for their lives.

Maus I - My Father Bleeds History

I just finished Maus I - My Father Bleeds History by Art Spiegelman. It is another graphic novel. This is a survivor's tale (a true story). It was a very sad book about the Holocaust. The Jews were represented by mice, the Germans were represented by cats and the Poles were represented by pigs. Vladek is Artie Spiegelman's father and he is telling his father's story that his father told him. Vladek had a wife named Anja and they had a very hard time finding places to stay and hide because no one would take them in and the Gestapo kept looking through their hiding places.

I liked this book and recommend this book to kids who are learning the story of the Holocaust.

American Born Chinese

I read American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang and Lark Pien. It is a graphic novel and I recommend that you read it. I thought it was hilarious because they had things that every kid would think is funny. One thing that I thought was funny was the monkey king becoming so powerful and everyone saying that he wasn't so good and he said "they all needed a little convincing." And then he beat them up.

It was surprising that everyone wasn't who they said they were. At first I wouldn't think that Danny would be Gin. But then, he made a wish with that funny old lady who said, "You can get anything you wish as long as you are willing to give up your soul."

If you are a kid and you like graphic novels, you should read this.
